John Derbyshire, a British-American conservative author and columnist for the National Review, has written a new book titled We Are Doomed: Reclaiming Conservative Pessimism. This wonderful work of bigoted literature contains a chapter railing against women's sufferage. A transcript of his interview with Alan Colmes is below the fold.
DERBYSHIRE: Among the hopes that I do not realistically nurse is the hope that female suffrage will be repealed. But I’ll say this – if it were to be, I wouldn’t lose a minute’s sleep.
COLMES: We’d be a better country if women didn’t vote?
DERBYSHIRE: Probably. Don’t you think so?
COLMES: No, I do not think so whatsoever.
DERBYSHIRE: Come on Alan. Come clean here [laughing].
COLMES: We would be a better country? John Derbyshire making the statement, we would be a better country if women did not vote.
DERBYSHIRE: Yeah, probably.
Yesterday, I wrote a diary about Phyllis Schlafley and how she felt feminism was the most destructive force in America. So here's another conservative showing their true bigoted colors. So, I guess this begs the question...how many women are going to vote republican in 2010? In 2012? If this is truly the direction the republican party and the conservative movement is going--making a hard right back to the ninteenth century--then I guess the only thing to do now is wait for the third party to emerge. Either that, or the wait is on for conservatives en mass to condemn this kind of backward nonsense.
This conservative clown isn't alone. He is part of a group that uses their guts and not their heads. This part of our nation has always been there, ranting, ignoring blindly the struggles and concerns of others while relishing their own assertions that "The American people agree with me." No, America is a nation of hundreds of millions of different people; millions of stories, millions of heartaches and successes and opportunities and failures. It is not our ability to take away the rights of those who would dare disagree with us that we have become a nation of laws and understanding; rather it is our ability to turn our nation's biggest questions to those who think with their heads and hearts, rather than their guts. Our country is great not because we are always right, but rather because we are big enough to point out our missteps. This country will not survive because of conservatism or liberalism or the failure of either, but because at the end of the day we are a country of rationalists, pragmatists; a nation of seekers and thinkers and lovers and tough-as-nails workers that reject the assumption that we can't listen to each other in order to come to better conclusions. We aren't a nation of white male christians, nor have we EVER been. We are a nation of debate. Those that scream will always, at the end, lose their voices. Meanwhile those who speak with even tones can talk until the sun goes down.
May this clown one day see the light. Perhaps us Kossacks can help him. http://www.johnderbyshire.com/ Here's the website. Let him know a thing or two!
