A lot has been written here about Drudge, Clark, Lehane and the Intern.
First, let me say this, I think we would all be incredibly stupid to believe that Clark and all other opponents of Kerry in the Dem nomination fight did not hope the story would come out. That's human and natural. Moreover, if it can come out, Rove will make sure it can.
That said, the issue seems to be what was done to get it out.
Lehane was accused of pushing the story. This seems entirely plausible even probable. That's what Lehane does. That said, the basis for reporting that he did, Craig Crawford, was blown up, with Crawford admitting he lied about this. See Joe Conason in Salon and/or diaries regarding same.
Clark was accused of "pushing" the story by discussing it off the record with 10 reporters. As I have stated before, that is just not the way stories are "pushed." Clark may have been inept enough to believe that it could be pushed in this way, but I don't think so. My personal theory, Clark was shoooting the breeze with reporters off the record, they asked him "can you really come back, Kerry looks unbeatable." And Clark responded at some point in the conversation that Kerry could have "intern" problems. Since kos confirmed a discussion, I sure wish he would give us some particulars on what was said. No need to reveal sources. Again, I think that the idea of "pushing" the story in the way described is ludicrous.
Finally, Drudge. What is Drudge? Easy, a Republican operative. Pure and simple. He will do no favors for any Dem ever. Who does he work for? Rove. Period.
Evidence? Remember Moore and the deserter comment and the early piling on of Clark. On Day 2 of that, Drudge went black on that story. Compeltely. Never to be mentioned again. Ever wonder why? Rove told him to shut up. Why? Because of what is happening now. The last thing Rove wanted to talk about was AWOL.
So, why does Drudge attirbute to Clark? Well, gosh, what do you think? To try and hide Rove's involvement in this.
To me what was amazing was the search for culprits here ignored the obvious suspect - Rove. Unbelievable.
