A majority of my life, I have voted with the Democratic Party. As a child of Kennedy Democrats, it pains me as a generation Xer African-American to see what has happen in one short year to the late Senator Ted Kennedy's seat and the ever growing massive revolt, against President Obama agenda....
I believe it is time that we as African-American really being asking ourselves a question. Should we continue to support a party that does not support our best interest?
In turn, I am not jumping over to the Republican end of the fence either. The teabaggers alone is quite enough to make me want to jump into a river of hot framing firewater before I could ever be one of them. There are true Moderate Republicans that I have supported. I guess, because in the end, I consider myself to be Independent more than aligned to any party.
Still, a large majority of my votes have been with the Democratic party on a national stage. The last president that did anything for my community in my opinion was Former President Bill Clinton. Many people in the African-American community experience the longest period of economic growth, during the Clinton Presidency. During Bill's days, I could quit a job on Monday and have another one by Friday, literally. Everyone I knew had money in their pockets. People were feeding their families and could at least afford some health care. Those days, to soon, came to pass.
I voted again for Gore and Kerry. Felt as if my vote was stolen on both occasions. Dealt with the awful Bush years as African-Americans do....with hope and prayer. I made it though....not as good as I had it during the Clinton years but decent....until the last year, when the bottom felt out.
Then HOPE with the election of President Obama. I believe, as African-Americans, we believe the country at large would give him time to reasonably fix the many problems that the Bush years left us with. Little did I know that four short months later, President Obama would have to take all responsibly for what was done for eight years under George Bush.
When I go on various progressive sites that one would think, the President would be still receiving our support. No, not really as I see too often for my taste, a similar bashing of President Obama that I would expect to see at a site like Red State. First, it is shocking. Then, I was disappointed. Next, I was angry and now I am just ready to give up on so called "Liberal" sites and being that reliable vote for the Democratic Party.
I think tonight was my breaking point. I see millions of people in my community that would be HELPED by the President's health care program, as written, right now. I see people in my community that cannot afford their medications, I see people delaying treatment because they cannot afford to go to the doctor, I see people working week to week at a job with little or no health care...trying to make it. There was hope to just hang on, just a little longer until the President we elected has the opportunity to have his health care agenda in place. This part of the Presidents' agenda was also, the cause of my Favorite Senator, the late Ted Kennedy's life.
Tonight, the people of Massachusetts decided that people in my community are not worthy of receiving decent and proper health care. This is in spite of the many LOYAL votes we have given to the Democrat party, time and time again. I believe that Teddy Kennedy would be so disappointed to know that the people of his state, with intend in their heart, gave his former seat to a racist, teabagger, sexist, pig. Why did they do this? Well, to deny President Obama an opportunity to start a health care program because they already have Universal Health Care in their state. What happen to party loyalty?
I know for me....I believe it is time to start looking for a new party. I hope that other African-Americans in my community will start thinking seriously, about moving their votes for the future, elsewhere also. It is becoming clearly by the day that the Democratic party has no room for, President Obama, his agenda or his ideas.
