Shouldn't we have a liberal website to counter all the lies about Social Security that gets put out there? Seems to me like most of the debate is based off of right wing talking points, and that just isn't very productive...
There are so many Social Security myths, and this is a debate that the right is really strong on. I wasn't able to find entirely up-to-date polling, but a survey from 2007 shows 66% believing Social Security to be in serious trouble or crisis, and that plays right into the hands of conservatives who for years have claimed that we couldn't afford the system.
I imagine that most Americans have heard the phrases: "expensive system", "can't afford it", "eventually will go bankrupt", and even Steny Hoyer recently came out with a quip about raising the retirement age (or pegging it to lifespan, I'm assuming that means he also thinks we're living longer). Honestly, the opinion towards Social Security seems to be 80% based on right-wing lies and talking points, and that is a HORRIBLE place to start the debate. We should really be working on that NOW, before it starts off on the wrong side of the middle.
I'm sure that this community could come together to create a wiki-like website where we can help provide effective counter-arguments to all the things the right is saying about Social Security. We'd collaborate to provide information on the major issues, explanations on how the system works and why the crisis is a fake one, and hopefully help give progressives the weapons they need to win the Social Security debate with Uncle Sal at the Thanksgiving-table.
