First of all you have to avoid wearing knickers.
Now how can the Democrats go butt naked you ask without ending up on a tabloids front page.
It may be a bit strange of an analogy first thing New Year's day here on Kos.
Now take the formula: assume
LGBT rights = Knickers
and since: from previous data
knickers = potential wedgie
Hence:
To avoid a wedgie: Remove your knickers
Or
Change the wording in the equation.
I'll explain.
Take the example of:
GOP wedge issue = DOMA + DADT
.
First Rule
Don't allow them anything to get hold of:
What the GOP in DOMA get hold of is the word marriage, which is then linked to religion, churches, and pretentious piety
.
Rule Two
Don't go knickerless
You may want to go for the knickers removal strategy and go for any two people can marry end of story by using State legislatures and the courts. This really riles up the opposition.
Rule two can work, but it tends to leave a bad taste all round.
.
.
Rule Three
Camouflage
Don't call it marriage call it something else, this has worked very well in France. Marie-Louise and I jumped at the chance for a PACS [civil union], it has been strengthened since it was first enacted.
Since it is open to everyone it has proved to be a great success and that was the reason it first managed to pass, it is considered a legal substitutefor marriage.
One partner must be French, and to the best of my knowledge this is still not recognised as a legal union in the US.
So we are staying put here in France.
.
Summary
We must not continue to allow the GOP the screaming word 'marriage' in conjunction with the word 'sanctity' it loads the game and causes a war of attrition
Change the rules of the game give them less to grab hold of, then call it what you will, I still refer to our PACS as our marriage.
DADT would then become completely irrelevant and could easily be struck from the books.
I cannot stress the importance of reducing DOMA and DADT to irrelevancies enough to all Democrats. This would give the GOP one less rallying cry and prevent it airing on the airways every five minutes.
These two issues hurt the Democratic Party every time, they are not minor issues but irrevocably bonded with equality and hence our human rights.
So join us in fighting to remove them from the books now in 2010.
Have a wonderful New year
