"U.S. Southern Command dispatched a team of 30 engineers, planners and a command and control group to Haiti on a Puerto Rico Air National Guard C-130 Hercules. The team will assess the situation and coordinate with the United Nations and the Haitian government. Initial assessments of damage were made in overflights by a U.S. Navy P-3 Orion."
The Lockheed C-130 Hercules in its various models is the turboprop workhorse of world logistics. Highly reliable and tough, it has been flying since 1950 in one version or another It is one of the very few aircraft designs to be still operating after 50 years of service. It is specifically designed to be able to operate into rough and unprepared airfields with little need for loading/unloading equipment. It can carry approximately 45,000 lb of payload, depending on version. For the record, it is also the only four-engined aircraft to ever land and take off from an aircraft carrier.
The Lockheed P-3 Orion is a four-engine turboprop patrol aircraft that has also been in use worldwide since 1959 in various versions. It was developed from the Lockheed L-188 Electra airliner.
"The US Coast Guard mobilized air and sea units just after the quake hit, District 7 headquarters in Miami said. As of Wednesday afternoon, four Coast Guard cutters and nine aircraft were operating to aid in the humanitarian effort."
