On Tuesday Massachusetts will elect a new Senator to fill Ted Kennedy's seat in a special election. It was expected the Democrats would win this seat in a land slide, however, recent polls show that the Brown the Republican candidate is leading in the latest polls over Coakley, the Democrat. While the Republicans did a number on our country over the eight years Bush was in office I think a Republican win here may be just what this country needs.
For the past several months, after Franken was finally sworn in and Specter party flipped, the Democrats have had a 60-vote super majority in the Senate. However, this is truly not the case. Democrats in name held a super majority, but when it came to actual votes they really only held a majority.
There's a small group of Democrats in the Senate known as the Blue Dogs that tend to give a little trouble to the Democratic base and then there's other more ridiculous people like Joe Lieberman. If the Democrats were to lose a seat and fall to only 59 seats Lieberman and the Blue Dogs become irrelevant. The Republicans will never follow through on any meaningful legislation due to their unpatriotic effort to see Obama fail. The disastrous Health Care Reform Bill in the Senate will be killed.
A Health Care bill with no chance of it ever passing a 59-41 Senate, Congress will have no other option than to consider passing any health care through reconciliation if they want one big reform bill. As for any other meaningful legislation Democrats will have to resort through the typical Congressional tricks. Add them slowly as amendments to legislation that must pass like a War Supplemental Bill that will make the Republicans look weak on National Security if they don't pass it. Instead of one large Health Care Reform Bill that demands we all give our money to the private insurance companies we can amendment by amendment pass laws that begin pulling back on the awful practices of the insurance companies without forcing everyone to buy their products.
In essence Joe Lieberman isn't an issue anymore. We no longer need to negotiate with him. We no longer need to give him a Chairmanship. He becomes completely useless to the Democrats.
