Will nasty phoners win Massachusetts? I don't think so.
I am worried about a backlash against Obama supporters and how that may play out in Masssachusetts. I have worked in too many Obama supporter phone banks where some phoners dripped with condescension. Needless to say, such phoners are not very effective although, from their point of view, the problem is stupid, apathetic and immoral voters.
This nastiness problem is not limited to phone banks. I have noticed that too many of Obama's supporters respond to criticisms of Obama by insulting the intelligence of others, their morals, etc. On DailyKos, I've seen Obama's supporters write vicious, nasty and cuttingly sarcastic insults directed at others who question how Obama is handling things. I can't think of a way to alienate others faster than this.
It seems that every insult with which an Obama supporter lashes, drives others away. Ultimately, many start thinking, "Geez, if this is what Obama supporters are like, maybe I am not an Obama supporter."
I have never noticed that anyone becomes popular by insulting others. Perhaps Obama supporters might find it helpful to stop calling others stupid, questioning their education, their writing styles, etc.
How about trying to be nice for a change? And if you can't do this, how about avoiding the phone banks realizing that the phones are best left to those who turn on the charm. And how about tamping down on the nasty and saracastic criticisms on places such as DailyKos? The nastiness just drives most away.
