Much controversy has surrounded the taping and broadcast of the San Francisco based Federal trial over California's ballot Proposition 8 which repealed the California Supreme Court's marriage equality ruling and enshrined a discriminatory provision in the state's constitution. Last week the Supreme Court in a narrow 5-4 decision ruled against the broadcast of the trial to other Federal courthouses, but left the issue of broadcast on YouTube undecided. Well, guess what? The trial is coming to YouTube...sort of
After the Supreme Court's ruling, the judge in the trial case decided to pull the case from a pilot program on the 9th Circuit that would broadcast trials on tape delay on YouTube. So how is the trial going to be broadcast on YouTube if the case was pulled from the pilot program?
From LA Weekly blog:
Freelance journalist and filmmaker John Ireland, who's based in Los Angeles and regularly examines gay rights issues, will produce a daily re-enactment of the Proposition 8 federal trial and post it on YouTube, starting this week.
Ireland has been casting the parts of pro-gay marriage lawyers Ted Olson and David Boies, U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker, and anti-gay marriage attorney Charles Cooper, among others, over this weekend.
Ireland and his crew came up with the idea of the re-enactment soon after the U.S. Supreme Court blocked a video feed from coming out of the San Francisco courthouse last week.
This idea had been batted around on Pam's House Blend and I even mentioned it in last week's WGLB. That wish is coming true.
Ireland made the casting call via Craigslist with a complete list of the parts needed:
