WASHINGTON – White House officials and Senate leaders predicted on Sunday that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will be confirmed for a second term.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said a new four-year term for the central bank head is needed to ensure stability in the financial system. Lawmakers would send a bad message to financial markets by "playing politics in any way" with Bernanke's nomination, Gibbs said.

Obama called Senate allies on Saturday to make his case for Bernanke, whose term ends Jan. 31. The Senate is scheduled to vote on Bernanke by week's end.
I'm sure that the Obama apologists, Obama PR team and Obama League of Kossack Defenders (tm) will jump all over this diary, but frankly, I've had enough of the hypocrisy. I can almost hear them whining already:
"Give him time, he's been in office for only a year and this is all part of the deep chess game that he's playing, and during the campaign he never promised to fire Bernanke and you can't expect him to do something that during the campaign he didn't specifically promise to do."
etc., etc.
Meanwhile, it's becoming crystal clear that the Cheney/Rove/Bush Machine couldn't have planned a better person to take over than Barack Obama and one has to wonder if maybe they did.
He all but pardoned them, after all. He kept their crew in place. The crew that caused this financial disaster.
Now, a lot of people point out that a Presidents first year is the most important and that of course, the outgoing crew was going to do all they could to hamstring in incoming president his first year. All of that is true. But what they fail to answer is the question why would Obama keep Bernanke, Geithner, Gates?
The obvious answer is that Obama was put into office to do exactly what he's doing. Bush/Cheney/Rove duped the public.
And certain people at Daily Kos have been either in denial, or are actively working to continue duping the public ever since.
I believe Obama has no credibility and I certainly wouldn't trust him to do the right thing.
I also believe that until this website does something about the Obama Noise Machine that is driving away progressives in droves, that this website also loses credibility and can't be trusted.
I would hope that people around here listen, because this place was once a beacon of hope. Now it's where you go to find out what the latest White House spin is.
