Kentucky is at the center of American politics right now. Quite frankly, we've gotten used to it. We're always the home to competitive US Senate races, and this year is no different. Democrat Jack Conway is fighting off Republican Rand Paul in a battle that is sure to be one for the history books. In the background, however, there is a candidate running for the United States House of Representatives who is more Progressive than Jack Conway, and that candidate is Jim Holbert.
Now don't get me wrong. I like Jack Conway and fully intend on voting for him (I'm working my butt off for him, too). But folks really need to stop labeling him a "Progressive" and call him what he truly is: a fairly Conservative Democrat for national standards.
Jim Holbert on the other hand is a proud Progressive who isn't afraid to speak the truth.
He's openly called for an immediate end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan:
America's military men and women and our allies have accomplished the objectives for which we went to war in Iraq and Afghanistan, and now the people of those nations must decide their own future. That's why I support withdrawing American troops from Iraq, Afghanistan, and the remainder of the Middle East as soon as possible. Further progress in the War on Terror will be made through energy, industrial, and foreign policies which serve American interests, not by continual foreign war which wears away our military, increases our national debt, and plays into the hands of our enemies. I support withdrawing American forces from many nations where, for far too long, we've maintained expensive bases. Our military forces should be reduced to a size sufficient to defend America and our legitimate interests, and our wasteful and corrupt military procurement program should be reformed.
He strongly supports single payer health care:
The time has come to enact a national, single-payer government funded health care system such as the proposed United States National Health Insurance Act (HR 676).
He stands strong for a comprehensive national energy plan:
I will work toward a comprehensive national public works construction program of wind and solar electric generating plants, nuclear plants, and coal gasification power plants. Such a program will provide both jobs and a core national capability to produce environmentally responsible and renewable electric power.
...and, he's a strong supporter of the rights of labor:
I will stand for laws which protect and strengthen the rights of America's workers to organize for better wages and working conditions. I will work to overturn the "free trade" arrangements that destroy American manufacturing and cause continual trade imbalances with foreign nations. I support tariffs and other protective measures to reestablish American manufacturing self-sufficiency and quality in textiles, consumer electronics and appliances, alternative energy, automobiles, and other key industries.
Jim Holbert is a strong, bold candidate who is working very hard to win on Election Day. We're working the phones and walking the streets every day to get out the vote. We need your help to keep it up.
