Dear Lt. Choi,
I'm sorry to hear that you won't be voting for President Obama in 2012. I can understand your frustration with, "Don't ask don't tell", because I was in the military when it was enacted and I thought it was stupid. President Clinton wanted to end the policy of kicking out military personnel but because of the almost universal distrust of the Clintons by military brass he couldn’t. Then Congress in its capacity of immense stupidity made Reagan’s homosexuality is incompatible with military service directive of 1982 part of the National Defense Act. Clinton reacted by issuing Don’t ask don’t tell basically telling the military not to conduct "witch hunts". Fast forward to the Obama administration. I believe that President Obama is deeply committed to ending the prohibition of openly gay people serving in the military. I also think that he wants it ended in a way that won’t let Republicans scream that the only reason gay people can serve in the military is because of activist judges. I can’t say that I have any inside information on this but in my mind it is the only logical reason why he wouldn’t let a judge’s fiat end the policy.
As for you not voting for President Obama in 2012 it is definitely your decision but here are some of the people you could vote for:
Sarah Palin: "made a choice that I wouldn’t make".
Newt Gingrich: "homosexuality is a sin".
Mitch Romney: "no civil unions or gay marriage, and absolutely not serve in the military".
Mike Huckabee: "isolate carriers of this plague (AIDS)".
John McCain: "I will personnaly filibuster repeal of don't ask, don't tell."
I personally couldn’t vote for any of the above characters or any other Republican nominee in 2012. I know that you could just not vote for the top of the ticket. The problem with not voting is it just as good as a vote for the other guy. I can’t imagine what your experiences were like but I want you to vote for President Obama in 2012. The only alternatives should be unacceptable.
Remember, Friends don’t let friends vote Republican.
Very respectfully,
UTREPUB
P.S. If the Republicans take control of the House in November I think that the administration will drop the appeal.
