Democrats are very worried about the coming midterm elections, and I'm very glad, as we need to keep the momentum from the 2008 election. It is very important to understand the significance of that election in light of what is happening now.
If you were a Republican in 2008, you saw some pretty scary things happening. In the past elections, a great deal of effort was put toward voter suppression in Democratic areas of the country. The worst of it had been in Florida and Ohio in the 2000, and 2004 elections. The 2008 election was a wake up call for conservatives. If liberals, progressives, young people, blacks and hispanics became energized to fulfill their electoral responsibilities in full measure, it would be the end of Republican, conservative power in the polls, and the end of life as they knew it.
Hence, in all the rhetoric, from Boehner and others, it was war on Obama. It was battle to preserve the world as they knew it and had enjoyed it. They knew that if Obama had been fully successful in restoring the economy and getting health care through congress, he would be a national hero and impossible to ever defeat. So the only strategy open to them was to fight tooth and nail against any form of cooperation toward the restoration of the economy. You saw it. It was beyond reason. I saw it, and I know that somewhere in email files somewhere in the hard drives of Republican strategists, this knowledge of the end of the world as they knew it was discussed and firmly agreed upon. It was not just a shared understanding. It was spelled out in bullet points if not in real bullets. Attack was the only available defense when the world is turning completely around.
The demographics have to be frightening for Republicans. We are raising new generations in which race and sexual preference don't matter. And within the changing demographics is the reversal of power structure.
I swore at one time that I would never vote for Blanche Lincoln again, but I plan to vote for her on Monday, and I urge every progressive to get over whatever is ailing you to get out the vote. If you can't rationalize voting for your blue dog democrat, consider voting for yourself and a new day in America. It has been long in coming. Cheers to you all.
