Welcome back to GaylyKos! We had some terrific input in last week's diary and we're really excited about plans for this new community of LGBT Kossacks and allies. However, we've come to realize that we got ahead of ourselves--many folks are intensely focused on next week's election (thank you all!), I'm in the middle of moving across the state, and indiemcemopants has a lot going on, as well.
Since we promised a follow-up today, I'll give you a quick recap, then we'll open it up for discussion on LGBT issues--there's a lot going on! As the old version of the Peter Pan ride at Disneyland used to say, "C'mon everybody, here we goooooooo...."
GaylyKos is a community diary series for LGBT interests posted (whenever) by volunteer diarists. This is an inclusive gathering place for all LGBT people, our friends, family, and allies. GaylyKos is not in competition or conflict with any other LGBT series at Daily Kos--in fact, we support other LGBT series and individual diaries. Our focus is on individual diarists writing about their specific experiences and we especially encourage first-timers and people from diverse backgrounds to sign up.
As a community diary series, the comments are a major part of the process. The author's diary is a jumping off point for discussion, including humor, pictures, and varying viewpoints. GaylyKos is not intended to be a tightly managed series--it exists to allow people to speak from their own experiences on a wide range of issues affecting LGBT people and communities.
Participation is open to all and the only "management" per se is the people who do the work to keep it running. There is no group "editorial voice" as every diary includes the byline of its author.
Our only rule is to be kind, respectful, and inclusive; trolls will be criticized on their hair, make-up, fashion, and grammar and subjected to recipes.
Last week we seemed to get the most interest in starting a weekly diary series written by volunteers, similar to KosAbilty, GUS, and others, and possibly a weekly news digest. Over the next two weeks we'll continue to follow up with people who have expressed an interest.
We haven't yet finalized a coordinator or a day of the week. We would probably post it in the late afternoon, somewhere around 3-5 ET. Since indie and I are committed to supporting KosAbility on Sun. and Wed., and indie has another commitment on Thurs., I'm just putting the remaining days into the poll. There's a possibility we might just continue on Tuesdays, depending on what people think. This will also depend on who is coordinating/moderating.
We're really excited that a dozen people have expressed interest in writing diaries. As soon as we settle on a day and time and finalize a coordinator, we'll post a sign up sheet.
As far as the news digest goes, several people expressed an interest and we'll be following up with them, probably after election day.
I'm sorry we don't have more to report--but in our excitement over getting this started, I'm afraid we failed to take into account everything that's going on this month. We hope everyone will be patient and come back after the election. We certainly don't want to detract from GOTV and everything else people are doing!
So let's use this diary as an open thread on LGBT issues and for further discussion about GaylyKos. Because of next week's election, GaylyKos will not post next Tuesday, but will return at 5pm ET on Tuesday, November 9. In the meantime, indiemcemopants will be posting a pre-election diary this Thursday highlighting progressive candidates around the country who support LGBT equality and deserve our support. Y'all be there, hear!
Thanks again for all the great discussion and input last week--we were really thrilled at the response!
