Not sure what to do with the bags of candy your kids collect on Halloween? Yes, its fun and its only once a year, but that candy can linger for weeks and is just plain bad for your kids to eat everyday. My solution? The Candy Bank!
Typically, kids faced with a pillow case full of candy will do one of two things-- eat it all on Halloween night or eat a few pieces everyday for a couple of months. We don't have candy in our house usually, so this presents a problem for us. I don't want them eating it all at once, but I also don't want them eating candy everyday for 2 months. One of my daughters is hypoglycemic, so the candy thing is especially problematic.
So, a few years ago I came up with the idea of the Candy Bank. Simply put, I buy the candy back from them. They can choose how much of the candy they sell to me, but they have to decide on Halloween night (no eating for a week and then selling me the dregs). They can do whatever they want with the money. I pay $.10 for minis, .25 for fun size, and $1 for full size. They get a $5 bonus if they sell me all of it. If they decide to donate it to UNICEF, I double it.
The money I spend is well worth it. The Halloween candy becomes a manageable indulgence and I don't stress about candy in the house for weeks at a time. My kids realize that they would rather buy something fun with the money or donate it to charity.
I take the candy deposits to the area soup kitchen or food pantry where dozens of people can enjoy it. Or you can bring it with you on your GOTV canvas.
Have a fun Halloween everybody! Now back to politics!!
