In case you haven't heard, the fire department for the City of South Fulton, Tennessee literally sat and watched and did nothing as a family's home along with their three dogs and cats went up in flames. Why did the fire Department do nothing, because the home owners forgot to pay their $75.00 "annual service fee." As Mayor Neil Crocker put it, "if the city allowed people to pay after the fact there would be no incentive to subscribe. As an analogy, he said an insurer won’t pay for an auto accident if insurance lapses."
More below the fold.
This is an example of where the "rugged individualism, every man for himself" attitude held by right wingers all across this nation gets us! If a family failed to pay a $75.00 fire fighter's fee because they forget or simply couldn't afford, then we'll just let their house burn to the ground; and if some of the people are still in the home as it burns, well then I guess that's too bad. If a family can't afford to pay a tuition fee of several thousand dollars because they make too little money; well then that family just doesn't get to send their kids to school. Maybe their kids would do better working long days in a local factory anyway. If an uninsured individual who also happens to be broke comes to the E.R. experiencing chest pains; well that's just too bad. No payment; no treatment!
Is this really where we're headed as a society? Are we becoming that hateful to one another? This tea party mentality has to be stopped in its tracks! How can we stop them? We need to start making headlines out of stories like this one. We need to call them on the carpet over these kind of ridiculous positions! Almost all of these right wingers claim to be Christians, so when they espouse their radical views that are clearly inconsistent with Christ's message of love and compassion we need to challenge them with scripture like this and this in order to demonstrate that they are not truly Christians, but that they are instead nothing but a bunch of hypocrits.
