I've been involved in a variety of GOTV activities for the Illinois Democratic candidates - phone banking, door-to-door, personal appeals to friends, facebook friends, etc. My contacts reveal there is some bad news and good news for Illinois' Democratic candidates.
First the bad news: hardly anyone likes either Pat Quinn or Alexi Giannoulis. Even some of my most committed Democratic friends have made it clear to me that they don't like our candidates for US Senate or governor. If they are having trouble with the really progressive Democratic people that I know personally, then I can imagine the difficulties they will have with people who don't pay that much attention to politics or aren't as naturally progressive.
The good news. 1. Even though the people I have been talking to don't like our candidates they are still going to get out and vote and they are going to hold their noses and vote for Quinn and Alexi. 2. Should Quinn and Alexi lose, I don't think their losses can be viewed as a referendum on how people view Democratic policies or how Illinoisians feel about Obama. It will be because they are both deeply flawed candidates that people just could not enthusiastically support.
