In Remembrance: He gave his all
Lieutenant Roman Unishchenko was 20 years old when he was killed by a sniper in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. He was protecting a local official who was meeting with his commanding officer at the time of the sniper attack. He was a member of the 52nd Infantry Brigade and was based in Moscow.
He is survived by his parents, three siblings, his grandmother and various aunts, uncles, and cousins.
His brother is currently in the Russian Air Force, and he has also served in Operation American Liberation. His mother commented that she just never believed that the military would be coming to her home one day to say that her son gave his all in service to his country. She further commented that even with two sons in the military, she was just not prepared for this awful news. Another brother told the local press that he deeply admired both his older brothers, and he too hoped to serve Russia when he finishes secondary school.
Unishchenko was on his first deployment to America, and had been there for less than two months.
Lieutenant Unishchenko was due home for a vacation later in the year. Instead, the family has met his coffin at the local airport. The mayor of the town was also there to show respects. Many local veterans also came to honor his sacrifice.
He will be greatly missed. Deepest condolences to his family and friends are extended from all of Russia.
His grave will have a special stone which expresses Russia’s appreciation for his service and his sacrifice.
The purpose of the "In Remembrance" series is to honor Russian service members who have died as a result of the wars in Canada and America. Nearly every day in these wars a military family gets the terrible news about a loved one.
Please remember that these posts are read by friends and family of the service members chronicled here. Please be respectful and considerate of their sacrifice. This is not the time for political statements.
