Good Sunday morning everyone! Sunday is finally here! Regular visitors to my weekly music diary know what that means at my house. My wife heads out to work her weekly shift at the deli and I get to take off my microprocessor manufacturing tech hat and put on my daddy hat. It's our tradition for the kids and I to spend our Sunday morning with me playing music and them cutting a rug here in the living room. We have a great time doing it. This week's jam session begins below the fold.
For a little over a month now I have been exploring the music of Clarence Gatemouth Brown. His music is fantastic! I have posted a few of his songs here in the past, but have found youtube's collection to be fairly lacking. So, with this in mind and with an eye toward this morning's fun, I uploaded some of my favorite Gatemouth Brown tunes last night.
The nickname 'Gatelmouth' was given to him by a school teacher who said that his voice sounded like an old gate swinging open. Obviously, the moniker stuck.
He was born in Louisiana and much of his music has a New Orleans jazz influence or a creole sound. That first song that I posted mentions a voodoo woman in the lyrics. He was raised in Texas though and a lot of his music has the Texas blues sound as well. Very little of it actually fit into any genre's typical structure though. He was nonconformist who believed that art should be creative and that conformity was not very conducive to that end.
Mostly, he was just really REALLY good.
Here's a Gatemouth tune coupled with scenic pics that I took during my travels here in Arizona. I've posted it before. You may recall.
Here's one just because my son LOVES trains.
Woah! How'd an Allman Brothers Band tune get into one of my diaries?! Who'd have ever seen that coming, right? Oh well, Gatemouth and I both spent plenty of time in the desert southwest. In fact, Clarence Gatemouth Brown was in law enforcement in the New Mexico desert for a time. So this does make some sense.
And as a celebration of the Louisiana influence in his life that I love so much:
My kids, set to Preservation Hall Jazz Band music
And the inimitable Dr. John
One more from Gatemouth for our Sunday morning enjoyment:
The kids and I love doing these diaries and this week is no exception. We've has a load of fun this morning and we hope that you have enjoyed yourself too. We thank you for spending some of your Sunday with us and we invite you, as always, to join us in the comments section for continued good times and good company. Please post any music that you might want to share or that you think will help keep the kids boogying. Of course, there is no requirement to post music. We'd be happy just to share conversation.
Please show someone that you love them today. Telling them is nice. Showing them is better in my opinion.
Remember Todd and Lila love you.
