Mark my words--if Joe Miller somehow manages to become the next Senator from Alaska, he'll eventually end up being the first Senator to be expelled from that chamber since 1862. The reason? As near as I can determine, there has never been a Senate candidate with a reasonable chance of winning who has been as manifestly unfit for office as Miller.
Say what you will about the likely roster of raving idiots who will be in the next Senate--Coburn, DeMint, Inhofe, and Lee. But you can't say that they're morally unfit for office. Not so Miller. Based on what we now know about Miller, this guy is morally unfit to be Fairbanks' dogcatcher, let alone Senator for Alaska. He hid his interest in 40 acres of land--a clear violation of federal law. A staggering litany of misconduct while working as a lawyer for the Fairbanks North Star Borough. And that's just what we know.
I cut my teeth in politics during the Clinton years. Since then, I can't recall a Senator coming into office with as much ethical baggage as Miller would should he win. This is why I'm stunned he even has a chance to win.
Any other state, any other year, and the revelations about Miller's ethical lapses would have long since destroyed his campaign. But we're talking about a state that nearly reelected Ted Stevens after he was found guilty of corruption (OK, Justice was forced to effectively vacate the verdict due to prosecutorial misconduct, but the guy was still manifestly guilty).
