The Chicago Tribune was responsible for at least 2 key election results last night: Kirk's senate win, and Dold's victory here in the 10th district. Both results were close enough that your paper's biased reporting and inaccurate editorials likely were enough to give the races to the Republican candidates.
I wonder how many of you believe that a newspaper, not through accurate reporting but through thinly veiled political campaigning, should play such a role. I certainly don't, and many of the thousands who've canceled their subscriptions in recent years probably agree with me. I'm finally canceling my subscription too. I can not, in good conscience, continue to support an organization which so actively contributes to the misinformation among voters.
Just to be specific, your relentless negative coverage of Alexi Giannoulias, with its damning headlines and large, unflattering photos above articles with little (to no) substance associating Giannoulias with any wrongdoing make me appreciate those who cared enough to seek the truth and cast their votes for him. Your ridiculous endorsement of Dold, in which you said you believed he was a moderate, in spite of all the evidence, was stunning to anyone who watched the endorsement interview or followed the campaign closely. When that endorsement was not enough to affect the polls, the Tribune ran an attack editorial on Seals that was inaccurate and misleading. Unfortunately enough people still consider your paper to be a serious source of information and believed the attack. Ironically, it was Bob Dold and your paper making false attacks on Seals.
So now we in the 10th are stuck. The congressman who lied to us for 10 years (and your paper never covered that until the national media forced the situation), has flip-flopped on most major issues (hence the many endorsement losses) and has been famous for his inaccessibility will be our Senator, and the lightweight guy who is "more conservative than I let on" will be our congressman.
I think you can take credit/blame for both.
