It seems like a tide of like-minded sentiment has been growing: Obama is weak, alienating his base, capitulating to his enemy--basically screwing up. With his tax bill, he's created something for everyone to hate--if you can't find something in there that pisses you off, you're not looking hard enough. So here's my one sentence of advice:
Stop proposing legislation that pleases Washington, and start proposing legislation that pleases REAL PEOPLE.
Get somebody fired up about it--anybody
Give people a piece of legislation that takes a stance, not some watered-down, concession-filled garbage that will only get worse as it passes through Congress. No one will stand up and fight passionately for that bill because there's nothing passionate about it. The left doesn't like the continued tax cuts for the rich. The right doesn't like the spending attached. You might expect that disgruntled attitude after a bill's gone through the House & Senate, but that was Obama's starting point.
Accepting compromise is one thing. Starting with compromise is another.
