I will admit I was a Hillary fan, but once Obama won the Democratic primary, I became an Obama supporter, I sent money to his campaign, and even worked at the polls for him on election day. I figured any Democrat would be an improvement over a Republican, and despite some recent disappointments, I have no doubt that is true. When I see people, particularly on this site talking about primarying him in 2012, I just shake my head and sigh. Obama is the best we're going to do in the next 6 years and any Democrat with some grasp of reality knows it.
The only person who would stand a chance of giving Obama a run for his money in a primary would be Hillary and she has too much sense -- and is too much of a team player -- to do so. Challenging Obama would pretty much kill her political ambitions if she still had any. It would also undermine Obama's chances in the general, and that would cause more people to dislike her than ever did before.
Besides that, Obama has really done a fairly good job considering the hand he was dealt -- probably the worst mess that any incoming president has had to face.
Despite all of the criticism that he should have dealt with the economy and left health insurance legislation for later, I was very happy that he went ahead with health insurance. I think he was naive to think he could get it passed with bipartisan support, and he wasted too much time trying to please Olympia Snowe, but he did get something passed, which is better than any president did before. This is a victory that, as far as I'm concerned, makes his entire presidency worthwhile.
I know that there's been a lot of sarcastic venting about how he's "playing eleventh dimensional chess" and I've felt frustrated for the last few months too, but DADT was just repealed, so I have to admit, maybe he does have some complex strategy.
I think that rather than waste a lot of energy complaining about Obama doing what any Democratic president would do, we should focus on putting pressure on the republicans and blue dogs to support the legislation that needs to pass to keep this country from sinking any further (e.g., START, and unemployment insurance).
Also, there's been a lot of discouragement about this past election. But one thing you have to admit about Obama, he has good coattails, a lot of democrats rode to victory on his coattails in 2008, and he still has good favorability, so if we work to put a positive spin on things, we might be able to win back the House in 2012 and this time, with better democrats.
