Really, after a certain point it's hard to know what to say.
A Utah state senator has proposed that the senior year of high school be eliminated statewide... to save money.
Oh yeah, now, just make senior year optional.
WTF is wrong with these people? I mean Republicans in the flyover states? Have these people gone nuts?
It's too easy to say that these are classic Republican dumb-down-the-population tactics. This just hits a new low. Is this Utah senator smoking crack?
The notion quickly gained some traction among supporters who agreed with the Republican's assessment that many seniors frittered away their final year of high school, but faced vehement opposition from other quarters, including in his hometown of West Jordan.
"My parents are against it," Williams said. "All the teachers at the school are against it. I'm against it."
[Sen.] Buttars has since toned down the idea, suggesting instead that senior year become optional for students who complete their required credits early. He estimated the move could save up to $60 million, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
Yeah, I think we should just make education in general an optional pursuit for our teen folk. After all, there's always WalMart. And really, when politicians are already using crib notes written on their hand to answer an interview question, how far are we, really, as a country, from utter political dissolution?
The torque from Thomas Jefferson spinning in his grave could power Hoover Dam.
Cutting kids loose, even if it's seemingly voluntary, without immediately putting them in college is a really bad idea. The thing that worries me about this is that many school districts may start to think about this crap, and eliminate college-prep courses at the same time, pretty much presenting kids with a fait accompli and making it impossible for them to stay in school and get organized for the next step.
This kinda shit really scares me, especially raising a kid myself. They will not thank us adults for pulling shit like this.
Saving sixty million crappy dollars. Really, when are we gonna get it through our heads that we have to start TAXING THE RICH again to some degree?
