I saw a story today about Scott Brown 'demanding' that he be allowed to take Senator Kennedy's seat by TOMORROW or else, or else...
Well he didn't take it any further than that.
Suffice it to say that I couldn't care less what Scott Brown demands. His election was a fluke, based on the fact that many progressives in Massachusetts wanted change from the status Quo.
As the President said shortly after the election, what swept him to power was the same force that swept Brown to power. So he should think about that: his base won't take kindly to him making unlawful demands on the Senate OR the President.
"Massachusetts Sen.-elect Scott Brown on Wednesday demanded to be seated immediately, saying that while he is scheduled to be sworn in Feb. 11, "there are a number of votes scheduled prior to that date."
In a letter from his lawyers to Gov. Deval Patrick and Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin, Mr. Brown argues that the results of the special election in Massachusetts on Jan. 19 are not in doubt and he should be able to take the seat right away.
"We represent Senator-elect Scott Brown. We understand that the election returns from Massachusetts cities and towns were transmitted this morning to the State Secretary's Office and by the State Secretary to the Governor's Office. While Senator-elect Brown had tentyatively planned to be sworn into office February 11, he has been advised that there are a number of votes scheduled prior to that date, For that reason, he wants certification to occur immediately. As he is the duly elected United States Senator from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, he is entitled to be seated now. "
He is NOT entitled to be seated now. What he fails to realize is that until he is certified, he has no right to demand anything. And Mr Gavin is the one who makes that decision - not little ol' Snotty Brown.
Mr Brown, this message is for you: You'll be seated when we say so, and not a minute before. Now, climb back in your truck and thank your lucky stars that they aligned just so for you that night, otherwise you would be a has been and Martha would be sitting in the Senate.
Now, shoo, fly.
