I was reading an article that a friend had clipped and sent me about the current state of banks in this country. Banks want their big profits, even when they come at the expense of others. I've watched too many people suffer because of the pain banks caused. I do realize that some people are irresponsible with their money, and it's not always the banks fault. I also realize that banks mislead, and always try to profit from you, no matter what. So I walked into my bank (the same bank that laid me off about a year ago) and fired them.
Read my story below the fold, and find out how you too can fire your bank.
I banked at the same bank for 15 years. I worked there for many of those years, so it just became a given that I bank there as well. I have never really had any problems with them. I have my checking, savings, CDs, investment account, and mortgage with one bank. Over the past few weeks I began to stop my automatic withdrawals from my bank accounts, and I began paying bills the old fashioned way by check. Well, I finally got all of those stopped, so I told my husband that it was time to fire the bank.
I won't go into how much money we have with the particular bank, but I will say we have our own financial advisor who helps us with all of our business. He's a nice guy, and he means well. We scheduled an appointment with him today and told him we needed to discuss our accounts.
We walked in and immediately told him what our plans were. We said that although we were happy with the service he has given us over the years, we could no longer ethically keep our money with his institution. He was very shocked, and his response puzzled me. He immediately began to attack the credit union where we told him we were moving our money. He said they had bad management etc. He called his supervisor in to talk with us. He tried to talk us out of the decision. He told us we had been watching too much TV, and we needed to stop and think.
Well, we told him we had thought about it, and that is why we were moving our business. We received cashiers checks for the deposit accounts, and hand delivered our transfer paperwork for our investment account. Our credit union will be refinancing our mortgage for us, and we'll be getting a much better interest rate.
We now know that in the future, our money will not be used to give some banker a big fat paycheck and huge bonus. We know our money isn't going to an institution that was bailed out by the government. We know we will be working with honest people at our credit union. We couldn't be more excited.
Please use this diary to share your own stories about how you have fired your bank, or how you plan to fire your bank! If you don't want to fire your bank, tell us why. This diary is meant to provide encouragement and spark conversation.
