Today at 5 pm EST, I'll have Heidi Shierholz from the Economic Policy Institute. I will also have Andy Coates from Physicians for a National Healthcare Program. This is going to be a GREAT show. Now, this is truly Progressive Radio.
While many progressives are mourning the loss of air America radio, I'm moving on. I have continued my radio show on the Internet. I've joined blog talk radio. Today, besides updating the news, I will talk with Heidi Shierholz about the job numbers were released last Friday. On the whole, we continues improvement in the job market. For the month of February, we only lost 36,000 jobs. While losing 36,000 jobs is nothing to celebrate, when you look at the trend of the last 12 to 14 months, job loss has slowed significantly. Heidi and I delve into the numbers. 26 million workers are either unemployed or underemployed. Minorities have been hit hardest by this down in the economy. We truly need a jobs program to get us out of this huge hole
I then turned to Doctor Andy Coates who teaches at Albany medical College and practices internal medicine. We discuss the current climate of health care reform. We are encouraged by the fact that single-payer program continues to come up over and over again. It's clear from studies that going to single-payer program will save between $300 billion and $400 billion. We discussed the lack of a true debate in public forum.
