Maybe the Republicans have given the Democrats a new theme for the upcoming midterm elections. If the Republicans are going to run on the issue of repealing any Democratic healthcare legislation, then the Democrats should turn around and run on the theme of repealing Republicans. Anti incumbency sentiment should be directed at the incumbents who have been so determined to fail, not those who are trying to succeed. There can be no better example of the Republican mindset than their determination that even if Democrats are successful, we are going to undo those successes. We should not let this message be ignored.
Can there be a better symbol of the Republican party than that the focus of their agenda has become, not new policy initiatives, not a path toward a revitalized economy, not to heal and cure our social problems, nor the advancement of our foreign policy, rather to repeal the progress of Democrats. If there is one step beyond a do nothing agenda, it's an agenda whose main priority is to reverse progress. I do not think there could be a more perfect symbol of the current incarnation of the Republican party.
The Democrats should never let go of this theme. It has been handed to them gift wrapped. And in an era when message and symbolism are so important, what more could we ask for? While the Democrats are moving forward with an agenda to improve the lives of all Americans, the thing that interests Republicans most is repealing the progress that has been made. We should remind the electorate of this everyday. Look at the Ryan shadow budget a little closer now. What is it really trying to do? You could argue that the real effect of its implementation would be a repeal of Social Security and Medicare as we know them.
It's time the Republicans were understood for what they are. And they have made it clear. They have no ideas other than that they don't want the Democrats to succeed. They have indicated their top priority will be to repeal Democratic progress. I think a far more productive agenda would be for the American electorate to begin repealing Republicans.
