again.
Sigh.
My position on Israel is pretty clear, and anybody who is curious about it can read it in my old diary, Palestinian Independence Day. Simply stated, I think Israel's best hope is to unilaterally support Palestinian independence along the '67 lines.
I also think Israel truly screwed the pooch last week, announcing new housing units while Biden was in town. It was destined to force a negative reaction. And boy, has it, particularly here on Daily Kos.
For a while, I/P was a real snakepit here, with some of the most awful things being said by both "sides" of the debate. Administrators came in and cleaned up a lot of the mess and some of the worst offenders went away. Eventually, I/P became a little circle-jerk of a few people saying the same things to each other over and over, and everybody else (including myself) stayed away.
Then came last week.
Folks, there is a tremendous amount of criticism that can be legitimately aimed at Israel. But when we cross from criticism of Israel to repeated the reliable old lies about Jews controlling the country, Jews controlling the media, dual-citizenship accusations, and the rest, we should take a deep breath and a long step back.
Anti-Semitism is back, and with a vengeance. And perhaps even more offensive, it has become so acceptable that people are uprating it like crazy. Don't believe me? Okay, I'll show you.
If Dkos hadn't been neutralized by Jewish lobby (4+ / 19-)
this would be on the front page. DKOS follows the media code of silence toward the Palestinian holocaust the same way many remained silent during the Jewish holocaust. Shame!

"Jewish Lobby?" Really? Comparing the "Palestinian holocaust" to the "Jewish holocaust?" Did we really have to leap right to that?
The same poster also chooses to completely misread a sentence to fit his fantasy that Israel controls the media, and five people uprate it:
Israel orders US media to obey (5+ / 8-)
"Oren told the consuls to lobby congressmen, Jewish community leaders and the media to convey Israel's position."

The "dual-citizenship" canard, the lie that people who are really loyal to Israel are undermining the United States from positions of power, got uprated TEN TIMES, even though the commenter could not provide an iota of support for his statement:
I've always been a bit wary of (10+ / 1-)
so many in the house and congress that hold dual citizenship and AIPAC's influence.

But he tried, and when he did, he quoted a hate site, one that leads with the headline "Who Controls Hollywood and the Media?" Just guess the answer the come up with to that question. Okay, here's the comment:
I'm at work but trying to get the info to back up (1+ / 0-)
my claim which i know is true...this will be a bit at a time so please bare with me
From http://www.viewzone.com/...
They detail the influence that this lobby has exerted, forming a series of international policies which can be viewed as in direct opposition to the interests and security of the American people. These acts and policies are more often than not carried out by US government appointees who hold powerful positions and who are dual American-Israeli citizens.

The same moron then comes up with a list of people who do NOT have dual-citizenship. They are Jewish. The two are, contrary to Jewish conspiracy theorists' fantasies, not the same thing.
In the next one, we have both the "Jewish lobby" and a Gentile telling us what is and isn't "racist":
I cant recommend the diary! (2+ / 5-)
It is set up different. Palestine does not have a vote and now not much of a voice on Daily Kos.
I love it how the jews want to only marry jews and their mothers insist on marring within their race... . So they are ordered to marry within their race.
This is not racist .. of course not, unless you are a jew. Prove me wrong. The wall going up in Israel and we cant say one word about Israel. We will get bullied and trashed off this website.
And our Vice President was humiliated. Enough is enough.
And the jewish lobby will be out in force.

Replace "jews" and "jewish" with "black" in that comment and imagine how many upratings it would get.
At least this one did not get uprated. I guess we draw the line now at outright calls for nuclear genocide:
Sad fact of the matter ... (0+ / 16-)
US would be better off if Ahmenidijad had his way and erased Israel from the map. Suddenly there'd be no reason for us always to deal adversarially with Arab and Muslim countries.
Might be good for Israelis to realize this every once in a while; Americans are starting to figure it out.

I know some people here will complain that I am showing hidden comments. Yup. I am. Because it's happening again, anti-Semitism is peeking out from behind legitimate criticism of Israel, and pretending otherwise is not the solution to making it go away. The way to make it go away is to stop treating I/P like a team sport, for Israel supporters to uprate their "team" and only downrate HR'able comments from the other side, and for critics of Israel (and, believe it or not, it is possible to be both an Israel supporter AND a critic of Israel) to stop doing it, too. If you're in doubt, just replace "Jew" with "black" and see how you would respond.
