So Rep. John Boehner apparently requested that Republicans act like grown-ups when the bill passed. Ignoring the fact that it's ridiculous that he had to REMIND them to act like grown-ups, I am appalled by the behavior of Republicans during Boehner's speech, Pelosi's speech, and while Bart Stupak was speaking.
Acting like a grown-up means NOT talking while someone else is talking. Being a grown-up means NOT booing the President of the United States when he's thanked by the Speaker of the House on the House floor during a speech. Acting like a grown-up is NOT yelling out "No!" with your leader while he gives a (drunken) rant full of lies about the process that went into making the bill into a law.
I'm sorry, but I could at least respect the Republicans if they respectfully presented their points of dissent without the lies and fear mongering. But even if they couldn't do that, they could at least be respectful of the people who are speaking.
Outside of that, the Republicans were also, as elected officials, egging on the Tea Partiers that were rallying outside of the chamber. The very same group of people who were SPITTING on Congress members and calling them racist and bigoted names just yesterday. In fact, I saw one Republican that tried to say the Democrats brought this upon themeselves. Tell me, what did Rep. Lewis do, other than be born Black to bring upon being called a "n----r"? What did Rep. Frank do besides love someone of the same gender to be called a "f----t"?
I think this needs to fall on the Republican leadership, ALL of the leadership. There's a quote in "Remember the Titans" that goes "attitude reflects leadership." So who's leading the Republican party? A bunch of toddlers?
The Bill Passed, President Obama is going to sign it. The Republicans lost after a year of fearmongering and lying to people about what was in the bill. They lost after a year of refusing to work in a true bi-partisan way no matter what President Obama and Speaker Pelosi and Leader Reid did to bring them into the fold. They lost after being incredibly disrespectful to President Obama even going so far as to violate their own House rules. They acted like children and refused to say anything but "no" and they stayed true to their childish tendencies right up to the end.
With that being said, I'm glad the bill finally passed. I'm glad President Obama did NOT waste his time and energy. I'm glad this bill got passed for his mother (even if it was a little too late to help her). I'm glad Nancy Pelosi has more than enough audacity to go out and do this. I also fervently hope that the American people start to truly see the Republicans for what they are. At this point I don't even think they have our best interests at hearts, they are only concerned about their own political futures.
Update [2010-3-21 23:34:43 by Muzikal203]: And MSNBC is reporting that someone on the Republican side yelled "Baby killer!" while Bart Stupak was opposing their attempt to stop the bill by using his amendment. I may not be a fan of Rep. Stupak, but he did a good thing just then, and all of those Republicans who so-called "had his back" turned on him REAL quick. I have more to say on the abortion issue, but that's not what this diary is about, and abortion has hijacked enough debate today. LOL
