My cats found a small amphibian, brown, about a 1/2 inch long. I'm trying to figure out where I can put it where it belongs to have a chance of living.
Full details below.

Thanks for your quick response. Now I know what the creature is and where to put it so it has a chance of survival.
First, I live near Albany, NY which means winter is barely over. I live in rural area, not a suburb. It's 11:23 EST, so I won't be doing anything about this till tomorrow morning.
Right now the weather is generally above freezing. I have a very tiny brook which I can put this creature near, which perhaps would give it a chance of surviving.
I'm not sure what a frog/toad that small is doing here at this time of year (is it full grown?, because tadpoles are hatched in summer?)
I say frog or toad, because as I understand it, frogs spend most of the time in or near water, and toads can wander afield.
Why it is in my house, I have no idea. I have an older house which is not tight, so I get rodents in the basement all the time. Not sure how a 1/2 in amphibian could get up the cellar stairs. So no idea how it got in.
The cats had followed the amphibian as it moved around. I picked it up with a tissue & dumped it in the toilet thinking it was a silverfish. Instead, it turned out to be a frog/toad and swam to the side of the toilet to get its head above water to breathe.
I got it out of the toilet. It's now in my bathroom sink with a dish of water in case it would dehydrate before morning. (The cats can't get in the bathroom. It doesn't appear to be injured. I think they were just looking at it, not attacking it.)
So, where do I put it to give it a chance of survival? I'm not going to aquire an aquarium for it, but I don't want to casually destroy it either.
Please post replies. I won't be able to read them (and therefore ask further questions) but hope they will be helpful.
