Back 30 to 35 years ago my fundamentalist neighbors didn't seem to care about politics. They worried that my daughter was going to hell because she had been baptised as an Episcopalian with a few drops of water rather than full immersion under the auspices of their "non-denominational" church. They expected the rapture to take care of everything soon. I'd never heard of the rapture, but as long as they focused there rather than on earthly problems we got along OK.
I allowed them to have my daughter baptised. It seemed cruel to let an 8 year old worry about hell. In a rural area with few children her age, I didn't want to cut her off from the little girl next door. I told her it would not make a difference and that there was no hell. (I am an atheist. The first baptism was to please grandparents.) If she wanted to do it "just in case" that would be OK. Shortly after the baptism, she relaxed and stopped asking to go to Sunday school with her friend.
Today, I wonder if I could get along with those neighbors. Back then the things they cared a lot about and pushed for made no difference in my life, but now people of similar faith seem to want changes that really ruin the quality of life for everyone. What happened to counting on the rapture to fix everything?
