All politics is local and here is some local politics in my corner of the planet. As domestic abuse rises in troubled times, republicans try to use the "good ole' boy" approach to solving it.
The local newspaper carried an article about a local folk singer who put the crime to music:
"A Bismarck folk singer is making some buzz with her song about a state politician’s second charge of spousal abuse.
Kris Kitko wrote "You can Beat Your Wife" late last week, one week after Rep. Dave Weiler, R-Bismarck, was charged with assaulting his wife for the second time in less than a year.
Weiler pleaded not guilty on March 12.
The chorus of the upbeat song is:
"You can beat your wife just once not twice/So You better get it right the first time/It should take one whippin’ – one good try/You can beat your wife just once not twice."
The "once not twice" reference is to high-ranking state Republicans who were reluctant to call for Weiler’s resignation after he was charged on March 12. Gov. John Hoeven and House Majority leader Al Carlson both said they would wait and see what would happen, but that a second assault conviction should lead to Weiler’s resignation. Both men are mentioned in the song."
