[Updated to add table borders]
Democratic Senators queasy about reconciliation for the HCR fix, should realize that (a) even 50 Dem votes represent 57% of the population (give or take a few points depending on the states of the Senators voting -- the scenario I have outlined counts the likeliest yes votes) and (b) the 60 Dem Senators that voted for the original HCR represented a whopping 65% of the population.
Table and explanation below the fold...
I just compiled the population stats by states and the Dem/Rep population representations under the yes/no vote scenario. First, the legends table explaining the stats table (First column = State; Second column = State Population):
Column Number | Column Label | Label Explanation |
3 | Dem | # of Dem Senators |
4 | Rep | # of Rep Senators |
5 | Dems Repr | Dem share of State population |
6 | Reps Repr | Rep share of State population |
7 | Final Vote? | Are Dem Senators likely to vote yes? If split, weight = 0.5 |
8 | FV Dem Repr | Final vote weight from prev column X Dem share of State population |
Finally, here is the stats table:

Then again, we have most polls showing public approval of most provisions in the actual legislation; more trust in Dems in general and POTUS in particular on health care legislation; most people do not care about process, they want results; better analyses coming out of the woodwork everyday showing there is opposition from the left for the bills not being sufficiently progressive included inside the "oppose HCR" numbers.
And do not ask us to push more, you are our elected representatives and as such, you were already given the power of attorney to act on our behalf; no more asking POTUS to do your work (he has enough on his plate without having to do your work for you -- he has made his positions clear and is ready to sign the decent bills awaiting your final passage, there is no more he can do short of stand in the well and vote aye). All the evidence is there, all the hard work required by all concerned parties (committee chairmen, reps/sens, POTUS, public) has already been done; so please, do your jobs: PASS. THE. DAMN. BILL.
