Right now it seems that there are factions within Daily Kos itself that wish to come from either direction of the left to middle spectrum (right is not part of my political lexicon) that if you are not on THEIR side, you are entirely against the interests of the Democratic Party and they are willing to name call, throw mud, and generally make a nuisance of themselves in order to point "those" people out as enemies to the Democratic Party who should either shut their mouths and toe the line, or criticize every single effort of the President and Congress.
The best diary on this subject more recently IMHO was MOT's discussion of which people are truly enemies to the primary causes of the Democratic Party and how we lose focus when we attack the people that should be our allies in place of the truly heinous people who are diametrically opposed to everything the Democratic Party stands for. MinistryOfTruth's Diary
Do I think that every person in the Democratic Party stands for those values? No... but I am wholly against the kind of purity tests that I have seen endorsed in recent diaries, where people claim that those who don't support x,y,z should grin and bear it and fully endorse those policies. Or where they say that if you are accepting of such and such compromise, you obviously do not care that their personal rights are being infringed.
It is easy to use people with different views than your own as scapegoats for important issues, but what we should be attempting to do with a Democratic community like Daily Kos is to come together with the purpose of finding solutions to problems, NOT to create factions within our community seeking to prove that OUR answer is the right one. This is a very easy trap to fall into when you find your beliefs challenged, but as the true "Big Tent" party, the fact is that we cannot afford to embrace the simplistic and singleminded mentality of the Republican Party. We cannot resort to "my way or the highway", because our strength is the ability to find common ground.
PS
I hope that people do not get the wrong idea by this and think that my belief is that we cannot afford to primary people who do not live up to the platform of the Democratic Party. In fact, I believe that incumbents should NOT be automatically endorsed by leadership in the Democratic Party if they have gone against Democratic values, and should NOT be rewarded with endorsements for holding Democrats hostage to their whims. (I'm talking to YOU Sen Lincoln, Sen Lieberman, Rep Stupack, and your "dozen")
We should do everything within our power to hold Democratic politicians accountable, and let them know we will not support candidates that do not hold true to Democratic ideals.
