The wackos, birthers, gun nuts, and tea party loonies have captured the spotlight. And our Democratic leadership has allowed them to do so.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I have had it up to HERE with all these right wing loony tunes on all the news channels night after night. There really aren't that many of them, but they are well organized and they have a knack of getting the cable news cameras to cover their "huge gatherings" of a few hundred sign carrying nut jobs. And since they first appeared during the "health care debate" I have been wondering when our Democratic and progressive leaders were going to put out a call for US to get out in the streets. It never happened during the health care debate, which is one of the reasons we didn't get single payer or a public option. It looked to all the world like the whole country was against it!
Now what do I see on TV? The newest thing that the cable TV channels are covering is "The Anger of The American People". And as an example of all these "angry Americans" who are they showing? The same lunatics, racists, and gun nuts that were out there protesting against health care, demanding "their America" back. In other words the so called "Tea Party" and their sympathizers. So if an outside observer puts on his TV tonight, he will get the impression that this country is on the edge of civil war, or at least large scale civil disobedience. This outside observer would get the impression that the American people hate Obama and the Democrats in Congress and what they have done and what they plan to do. Well, I don't hate the government, although there are certainly a lot of Republicans I don't like, and I think in general, the President is doing a decent job. And I'm not living in fear of my "rights and freedoms being taken away". And most of the people I know feel the same way, but you never hear that point of view on TV. All you hear and see are the right wing crazies running their mouths non stop.
Why are the Democratic & Progressive leaders sitting on their hands and allowing the Far Right to have a media field day night after night? Have they forgotten how many of us showed up on the mall in Washington on that frozen January morning to inaugurate our President? Apparently so! It's a shame. I wish I was a "somebody" in the Democratic Party and in the Progressive movement. Because if I was, I would put out a call for ALL PROGRESSIVES to meet in Washington DC for a huge demonstration in SUPPORT of President Obama and the Democratic Congress. A huge demonstration to counter act the "I hate our government" message of the Tea Party is what I would call for. If I was a "somebody". Unfortunately I'm not a somebody in the Progressive movement. And even more unfortunately, those who are "somebody" are apparently content to leave the public stage to the wackos of the far right. But hey, who knows, maybe one of the "somebodies" will read this and decide that this is a great idea. If that happens, I'm going to Washington!
