I currently live in the Indianapolis area and there was an editorial in the Indianapolis Star entitled "Coming To Your Curb Soon?".
The article discussed how Indianapolis consistently ranks as one of the least green cities in the nation and discussed some of the proposals regarding recycling.
I saw it as an opportunity to write a letter to the editor regarding my suggestion on recyling. I must admit, I forgot to mention that the suggestion is based off of some recycling programs in Canada, particularly the Toronto area. Oh well. They probably would have called me a socialist anyways. Here it is.
I was delighted to see an editorial addressing curb side recycling (Coming to your curb soon?, April 22) and the city’s attempt to seek out multiple proposals. Although many ideas regarding recycling exist, mandating such does not necessarily have to happen. Why not continue to have garbage pickup on a weekly basis, but rotate between recyclables and nonrecyclables? One week, people leave out three containers given to them for 1) plastics/glass bottles/aluminum 2) compostable foods 3) paper. The following week, the nonrecyclables get picked up. Individuals will continue to have the choice whether they want to participate in the recycling effort and garbage will continue to be picked up weekly. Later, when composting is done correctly and effectively, anyone would have access to such in order to recycle the nutrients back into the earth and increase soil productivity.
