The environmental cause could use a snappy put-down directed against the oil addicts. "Spill Baby Spill" is the answer. In the age of 15 minute fame and the snappy 10 second sound-bite something short and simple has a role to play.
The instinct of the left is to be subtle, serious, and sensitive, or so the critics claim. A simple-minded slogan should respond to that critique. It has a role to play in the campaign against environmental self-destruction. Unfortunately Barack Obama has abandoned the correct line against drilling for a compromise with oil junkies. At this point the slogan should be directed against his policies as well.
There are a number of well-known serious critiques against the drill baby drill campaign. The lead time is too long to have any short term effect and even in the long term not enough oil will be produced. But there is a fundamental weakness in the domestic drillers' argument that even those politicians who sympathize with the environmental cause do not get. The oil economy is global. There is no such thing as petro-isolationism. Even if the US were to get all its oil from domestic production, in truth an impossibility given the current demand, it would still be locked into an international oil market which the US could not control as long as it as it consumes oil.
The solution is not domestic as opposed to foreign oil dependence, the solution is a no dependence on oil whatsoever.
