I'm Shelia Smoot and in 4 days I will be on the Alabama Democratic ballot in what has truly been a grassroots effort to make history. Alabama has never elected an African American female to Congress. Furthermore, there has never been a female elected in their own right to a full term. They have either in this case and this case been appointed or won a special election to fill their deceased husband's term.
However, I've been a trailblazer before as I was the first African-American female elected to the Jefferson County Commission and the youngest member ever in 2002. While this election would be historic, I'm running because I want to improve the quality of life for the residents of the 7th Congressional District. I've been fighting for folks for a long time and I want to continue that fight in Washington.
We have 4 days until our election and we have been running on a shoestring budget the entire time. I came by here last night, thank you MinistryofTruth, for the liveblog interview last night. I enjoyed speaking with this community about jobs, education, our seasoned citizens and even took a question about the space program. I look forward to coming back and communicating with you when I'm a member of Congress. I won't let you down. And I will fight for you.
Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to stick around for many questions tonight like we have in the past. We have a number of campaign appearances to attend to throughout this Memorial Day weekend. However, I do want you to see what we stand for and what we have done in the community.
With the help of many of you we reached our goal of $2,000 on our Grassroots for Smoot actblue page.
We've raised that goal to $2,500 so we can get some water for our volunteers on what will be a hot Tuesday in Alabama as well as be able to transport our senior voters to the polls. For anyone that donates $20.10 or more today, we will send you a coveted limited edition Smoot for Congress t-shirt. (see in the picture above)
Our campaign has worked hard to communicate via the newest tools of technology and we have more twitter followers and facebook supporters than any other candidate in this race.
