Connecticut activists are picking up efforts to
draft a challenger to Joementum.
Within days of former Gov. Lowell P. Weicker Jr.'s suggestion that he might see a rematch with Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman in the next election, liberals and independents wh object to Lieberman's support for the war in Iraq have hastily created a "Draft Lowell Weicker"
But Weicker, who was a Republican when Lieberman turned him out of office in 1988 but later held the governor's office as founder of A Connecticut Party, is not the only potential challenger to Lieberman with an Internet site established by fans among disaffected Democrats.
There's also "DraftAmy.com," which is attempting to rally support for drafting New Haven-born actress Amy Brenneman, who played a Hartford Superior Court judge in the former primetime CBS series "Judging Amy." [...]
One of the names bandied about has been that of New Haven lawyer Ted Kennedy Jr., son of Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts. A graduate of Wesleyan University with a master's degree from Yale, Kennedy is director of Facing the Challenge, a nonprofit advocacy and public policy group focused on the civil rights of people with disabilities.
The Amy thing is a joke, even if the site's creators don't realize it. Kennedy would be interesting, but he's shown little interest in electoral politics thus far. It's hard to see him jumping in the race.
Really, it's got to be Weicker. And I know for a fact he's getting lobbied hard by various groups. And this is encouraging:
Swan said "people close to Weicker" had told him Weicker wasn't about to go after the Democrats' endorsement by himself, but probably would accede to a draft by town committees or local elected officials.
The Connecticut town committees will have a lot of say in this process. They could kill the Dump Joe efforts outright or give them a genuine boost.
