Here's why I challenge you Armando!
You have dishonored my house! ptewi! (I hope that didn't hit you that's just a symbolic thing... don't step there--- hey, nice shoes!)
Anyway, where was I, oh yeah, MY HONOR!!!! You sir---! , , , !
I read a comment of yours where you were talking to some guy about torture... the handle is Good Old Left Old, or something*. Ok, I checked it was, ok -- "Old Left Good left".
You say I'd love the way he's protecting torture with hypotheticals... soooo I love that sort of thing? I am sitting in a tree planning a wedding with "the justification of torture using abstract precepts"?
wtf? you sir, why!!! I ----- !!!! why I NEVER! !@#!@!! BREAKING NEWS!!! ENHANCE YOURSELF NOW@!!!@
What I'm getting at is...
I'm against torture! PRESS RELEASE GOING OUT RIGHT NOW>>>> RELEASE AM JAN 02 2005
I DON'T LOVE TORTURE!
Please place me firmly in the "not for torture" column please.
Anti-torture brigade here.
What was really going on. I'm flattered! Really! I'm your epitome for like an abstracty sort of corrupt the youth socratic smoke and mirror word wizard, I don't want to screw that up let me say right off. Cool!
But no, I swear mine is not the sort which wants to destroy the culture with abstracts that make us doubt if torture is really wrong like grandma told us. I believe we need and are getting a new philosophical foundation for a new global society. Not an erosion... a foundation, protections against erosion.
Your problem with Old Left is not with the philosophic method but with the purpose of that particular hypothetical that Old Left Good Left proposed. It aimed to ignore the pragmatics of the situation, I mean it was stated that way specifically, to ignore the fact that you can't know the person is guilty; to ignore the problem that torture is not proven effective, after thousands of years of practice(!).
And Morally! Forget about it. I don't recall if it was brought up but... What of people that know information but are not guilty of anything themselves..? A puzzle? Not really. There is no possible moral justification for turture, this is not in the proper sense a decision one human makes for another under any moral system, but it's part of some amoral ones.
So I challenge you to admit you were wrong sir wrong!!! Repair my good name among the non-torture-supporting parts of the internation.
I do not love defense of torture by asking broad philosophical questions or by any other way.
Relativism is about comparing things to each other, not in a vacuum of absolute right and wrong, but things in relation to one another. All you have is the real world to deal with, to measure something you need some other thing, so you deal with the real world, science. Reality as imperfectly percieved. Imperfect but pretty damn good in many cases. Hypotheticals are not difficult to judge nonsense or good sense, for those inclined to judge.
Am I right? You were more prone to Old Left Good Left's "hypothetical" than I, yes? I didn't take it seriously when I read it, in fact, "absolutism" had nothing to do with the idea that torture could be defended in some hypothetical way. You were more prone to considering that than I because I do enjoy hypotheticals in general you could say.
You exhibited a motion to grounding yourself in reality which is somehow automatically safe from these ghosts of these thought experiments - as if they really show that torture is defensible! heh heh heh!
You deny the value of hypotheticals... pretty desperate if you ask me! I suspect you might agree in retrospect? You know many hypotheticals are invaluable to mankind... I'm sure! You invoked me like a talisman, and for that, I am honored, and I challenge you to accept my gratitude...
please feel free if any philosophical danger befalls you in conversation, invoke me to ward of the evil. When I leave you may be less certain of what you knew... it's good for you I swear, if you don't OD.
As for being practical and understandable, I'll challenge you to a Pragmatist Show Down! A Practical Idea Think Off! But later on, for now I'll wait until after you admit you were wrong to say I was a vile, disgusting, torture supporting, uh, vile, disgusting. ! , , , ! no good lilly liverered hypothetical loving dangerous idea entertaining (I'm paraphrasing).
And by the way I think you DO understand what I say! ahah!
[UPDATED] redrafted... no real changes
