I know that there are many cat, dog, and critter lovers here at the Great Orange Satan. While some people here question the value of the "pootie" diaries, kindness toward animals is a progressive value. This is a very personal diary. I wanted to let you know that our beloved cat Spooky lost her battle with kidney disease today. Spooky was a part of our lives for over 14 years. While I have been owned by many cats since I was a child in Queens, Spooky was special.
Spooky started her life as a feral kitteh living in the woods behind our house. We would feed her occasionally, but we couldn't really get close to her or to her kitten. Marmalade. One cold mid-winter's night about 14 years ago, we opened the back door and Spooky and Marmalade walked right in. They hid on top of the kitchen cupboards for the first few days, but eventually they warmed up to us and came down. Neither cat ever went outside again.
Spooky was blue jersey dad's special cat. Even time he sat down in a chair, she was right there in his lap. She was always right next to dad, except at dinner time when she sat next to me. She would sit next to my plate and watch what I was eating.
Spooky was the queen of our household; she ruled the roost, and the other cats all deferred to her. She was solid gray, from her ears to the tip of her tail. Even her paw pads and whiskers were gray, although one of her whiskers tuned white in her old age.
Spooky was the queen of the intertubez. She almost won the Pootie Primary in 2008, and she has appeared in countless pootie and wozzle diaries. You can see here here when she was in her prime:
And here she is with her daughter, Marmalade:
She began to fail this winter. She had lost a bit of weight around the holidays, but her blood work was still normal. In May her blood work showed signs of kidney disease. She was on a special diet and hydration, but the kidney disease was just too much for our old girl.
Spooky has crossed the Rainbow Bridge, and she has now joined my old friends Mini and Mr. Nicky. I am writing this through my tears. Here is the political part of the diary. Please do what you can to help save the endangered wildlife in the Gulf. Spay and neuter your pets. Adopt a pet from a shelter or take in a feral kitty. Support organizations like Best Friends Animal Society that work to find homes for homeless animals.
Thank you, Spooky, for being there for us.
