It is now after 7:00 PM Eastern (4:00 PM Pacific), which means that the polls have closed in the first trio of states in what promises to be a damned interesting night of elections from coast to coast.
Georgia will decide which far-right Republican represents one of the most far-right districts in the land. South Carolinians will decide whether or not they buy the allegations against gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley, and whether or not Bob Inglis (SC-04) will be the next Republican to suffer a teabagging. Meanwhile, on the eastern end of the state (SC-01), we'll find out if adult voters are really capable of electing a guy named Tumpy (the nickname of Carroll Campbell III) to Congress. Finally, the commonwealth of Virginia sets the stage for several competitive November races with primaries in VA-02, VA-05, and VA-11. For added entertainment, we will see if one of the original teabaggers, Catherine "Ballot Box/Bullet Box"" Crabill, can sweep sophomore GOP incumbent Rob Wittman from office (here's a hint: early returns say a resounding "NO").
And that, friends, is just the preliminary card to what promises to be a pretty awesome set of main events. Later tonight, we find out if Blanche Lincoln (AR-Sen) becomes the third incumbent U.S. Senator dispatched in a primary, whether or not Sue Lowden's starcrossed run for the Senate turns up to be fowl (oooh...two puns in one day), and whether money screams in the state of California.
And all of it will be here on DK. Strap in for the night...this oughta be a fun one.
UPDATE (4:27 PM): Well, gee, that didn't take long. The AP has already called VA-01 for Rob Wittman. Catherine Crabill is currently grabbing 10% of the vote. Ouch.
