I have not seen this here, and I am not sure what the answer is for this move. So, I am asking a question in the form of a diary.
The issue at hand is that it sounds like Nancy Pelosi pushed through an up or down vote of the deficit commissions recommendations to be held during a lame duck session of the House after the election.
The relevant issue can be found here:
BREAKING: Pelosi Sneaked Approval of Vote on Debt Commission Recommendations into Rule Regarding War Funding, Vote Happening Tonight
FDL has learned that in a last minute move, Nancy Pelosi sneaked language into the rule that the House is voting on tonight regarding war funding.
Embedded in the rule is the requirement that the House will vote on the deficit commission's recommendations in the lame duck session if they pass the Senate.
The commission, co-chaired by Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson, is packed with members who favor the raising the retirement age to 70, means testing, and private accounts. Many also support investing 20% of the Social Security trust fund in the stock market
Pelosi got her wish. The House will have to give an up-or-down vote to whatever the Catfood Commission recommends. With Republicans and Blue Dog votes alone, cuts to Social Security benefits should have no trouble passing

There are two reasons that she could be doing this. Neither of which I am certain is the right answer.
The first choice, and the one that I would like to believe, is that they are pushing this in a lame duck because they believe that's the best time to defeat such a measure.
The second choice, the one that I don't like, but given the neo-liberal bent of the leadership is that they are pushing this in through a lame duck because they want to try to pass this while no one is paying close attention or when there is likely to be less political pressure to block the Catfood Commission.
Let me just end with saying, I don't care what anyone thinks of FDL. That's not the point of this diary. If you respond with comments about FDL, I will simply ignore you.
What I am seeking to understand is what in God's name are the Democrats thinking regarding the third rail of American politics? If there is an answer that does not amount to how brilliant the Democrats are such as her knowing something early on about the votes she has in the present House- that would be great. What's not so great is any arguments about how we should or must trust them. These are politicians. I don't trust them. So I want to understand this from someone who has insight into DC better than just wishful thinking. Thanks.
