Gad this is rich. Richard Shelby (R, what else), the ranking Republican on the Senate Banking Committee, is already calling for a repeal of the Financial Reform Bill. Here's what he said on ABC:
“We have empowered a lot of the regulatory bodies that failed us before and the question is what have they learned,” he said. “And it is not going to create jobs which we desperately need, it is going to cost jobs. It is going to hurt the economy.”
If course if Shelby really gave a shit about jobs, he wouldn't be joining the Republicans to blocking jobless benefits that help people get back on their feet.
Shelby went on to say:
“We don’t need this, what we need to do is create jobs. We are all consumers, and we like to make sure the consumer has some protection, but we basically protect ourselves. But I tell you, this is not a jobs bill, it is not good for the economy, it is not real reform...”
IFor him to squawk about creating jobs - e.g. giving a crap about average Americans - after he's voted against TARP, Children's Health Insurance and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act is so disingenuous and phony. (Yeah, yeah I know - what else is new?)
At the end of the interview he is asked what Republicans will do if they get elected to make things better. His response:
Less regulation and better tax policy that will create jobs and get America rolling again.
Uh, yeah...that worked great the last time you tried that.
