The AP carried a story from a couple days ago about thousands of Palestinians in Lebanon protesting against the Apartheid-like conditions in that country. For some reason, I didn't find any diaries here from those who usually speak up to defend the Palestinians against this sort of discrimination. I can't imagine why; I suppose it was just an oversight. Anyway, I thought I'd help out by posting it myself.
BEIRUT — Thousands of Palestinian refugees gathered on Sunday outside UN headquarters in Beirut to demand basic civil rights in Lebanon, such as a choice of jobs and ownership of property.
The majority of UNRWA-registered refugees live in dire conditions in the camps across and are denied basic civil rights. Under Lebanese law, Palestinian refugees can not own property or hold most white collar jobs (doctors, engineers, lawyers, architects) and are stuck in low-paid employment. They are also denied social security and medical aid in state hospitals.
The whole article is here. As many of you know, Lebanon keeps their Palestinians in 'Bantustan' refugee camps isolated from the rest of the population despite the fact that the vast majority of people living in these Bantustans were born on Lebanese soil.
(Having said all that, personally, I have some sympathy to the people of Lebanon as they have a very delicate demographic balance and have had lots of wars when that sort of thing gets altered, but I know those who are opposed to Apartheid do not consider demographics to mean anything and they will post lots of comments in this diary decrying Lebanese Apartheid.)
