Conservatives who write letters to the editor and comments in my local paper usually reply to anything posted by a sane person by calling them a liberal, often shortened to "you libs". I have taken to responding with the following:
Being called a liberal is not an insult, it is a compliment.
A liberal is:
Favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs
Favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, especially as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties
Favoring freedom of action, especially with respect to matters of personal belief or expression
Of or pertaining to representational forms of government rather than aristocracies and monarchies
Free from prejudice or bigotry; tolerant
Characterized by generosity and willingness to give
Of course, dictionaries are apparently among the books banned from the homes of conservatives since they constantly spew words without reference to their meaning.
