Edited to fix spelling error in title... wow, I need sleep. Sorry about that folks.
A friend of a friend (Kate Barnhart) has been targeted for aggressive prosecution by the Manhattan District Attorney's office as a result of participating in a nonviolent healthcare protest last fall.
Kate is the director of the New Alternatives (a homeless NYC-based LGBT youth group). She regularly speaks out for those who have no voice and now it's time for regular folks to speak up for her.
Stand With Kate
On September 29th, 2009 Kate Barnhart sat down at Aetna's insurance offices in Manhattan to demand they stop denying patients needed health care. Now we need to stand up for Kate who is being unfairly targeted after participating in non-violent civil disobedience protest of the health insurance industry last year.
Please follow the link to sign a petition to protest the refiling of charges after her case was already dismissed by one judge (for being insufficient – this is ridiculous they are doing this!).
A total of 16 people were arrested that day, and Kate is the only one who must return to court after the charges were dropped, supposedly because she already has a misdemeanor conviction (due to a previous anti-war protest), although other protesters had similar prior convictions.
