Think globally act locally, best defense is a good offense, and all that.
I personally am a bit tired of viewing the latest outrage of anything right-wing. It's overwhelming to the point of being mind-numbing. Yes the RW is based upon nothing resembling reality. Yes they have convinced people to vote and act completely contrary to their own best interest. Truly amazing (perhaps good subject matter for a course in social engineering) but it's actually irrelevant UNLESS we decide to stay on the defense.
Get that? Stop reacting, start proacting.
What I'm seeing is at the national level the corp media and corp politicos are doing whatever they can to be heard. Great. Ad revenues up, intelligent discourse down. We even see it here on DK as Rec List diaries flame pro and con Obama policies and actions. I say... whatever. This is valid but really, has no effect at all on movement of America forward.
What I'm seeing at the local level is that even in blue blue Minnesota, conservative LTE's are outnumbering progressive.
How to GOTV? Locally. Start now, today, writing at least one LTE per week. Do it first before you write another diary. Let other progressives know you're out there. Get other progs to do the same. Work it! Frame your letters in such a way that achieves three things: (1) speaks to emotions, not esoteric concepts of the greater good; (2) is easily understood even by the not-so-perceptive among us; (3) addresses one issue only.
We all know that attention span is at an all time low. We all know that Republicans back in power will freakin' destroy this country. So do something about it. Go on the offense. Don't try to counter the last outrage, that only accomplishes two things: (2) gives credence to the outrage; (2) keeps you on defense. Much better that you spend 1 maybe 2 SECONDS laughing at or ridiculing the insanity of the outrage, dismiss it, and move on to what's right, be strong.
You.Don't.Want.To.Be.On.Defense.
Here's a tip: If your "speech" takes longer than 20 seconds, it won't be heard.
One last note before I open the floor to comments is that this is a marketing campaign. Learn from the folks that have talked you into believing that Coke is better than Pepsi, or that you can get a healthy meal at a fast food restaurant, or that it's worth paying $300 for a pair of designer sunglasses.
It would be particularly helpful if comments could illuminate concrete steps and actions that others might find useful. Perhaps some LTE examples.
And if someone could help with tags, that'd be awesome. It's not out of laziness that I ask this, just that obviously it's not my forte.
The floor is open!
