President Obama on Friday laid out a winning message for the election:
Democrats want to make middle-class tax cuts permanent, but Republicans will block middle-class cuts unless millionaires and billionaires are also giving cuts to the tune of $100k per millionaire.
The message is powerful, but having the President just talk about it is not enough. It needs to be in the headlines day after day.
The Democrats have the power to make this happen. They should create a bill making the middle-class tax cuts permanent, and dare the Republicans to filibuster it. When they filibuster it one day, re-introduce it on the Senate the very next day and make them do it again. The headlines will read, "Republicans block middle-class tax cuts again!"
This same strategy worked brilliantly when Republicans tried to filibuster financial reform, and it will work even better with tax cuts. Mitch McConnell will be forced to defend their blockage of the popular measure and the Democrats will be clearly shown as defenders of the middle class.
